David Atwell Jr. was born on April 20, 1956, in Gough, Georgia, to the late David Atwell Sr.
and Susie Mae Atwell (Jenkins). He peacefully transitioned from this life on March 9, 2026, in
Augusta, Georgia.
David was raised in Gough, Georgia, where he attended schools in the Burke County School
System. He later continued his education at Bell and Howard Technical College (currently
known as DeVry University), where he studied Electronics. David also proudly served his
country as a member of the National Reserve Unit in Waynesboro, Georgia.
At an early age, David accepted Christ and became a member of Noah’s Ark Baptist Church.
During his time there, he faithfully served the church as an usher and a patrol boy, demonstrating
his dedication to his faith and church family.
On July 23, 1977, David married the love of his life, Mabelene Atwell (Huff). Together they
built a loving family and shared many years of memories, laughter, and devotion.
David held many jobs throughout his life, but his most cherished and meaningful role was being
a father. He took great pride in loving his children,
David was affectionately known by many as “Bear” or “Yogi.” He had a vibrant personality
and was often described as the life of the party. His warm spirit, humor, and ability to bring
people together made him unforgettable to those who knew and loved him.
David leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Mabelene Atwell; and his seven
beautiful children: Almontrie (Falisha) Atwell of Hoschton, Georgia; David (Tarla) Atwell III
of Pendergrass, Georgia; Kerry (Francesca) Atwell of Riverdale, Georgia; Dana Atwell of
Hampton, Georgia; Paul Atwell of Jonesboro, Georgia; Cortney Atwell of McDonough,
Georgia; and Shane Atwell of Jonesboro, Georgia.
He also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren: Kiarra Johnson, Almoni Atwell,
Alayshia Atwell, Joshua Edwards, Kerry Atwell Jr., Saige Atwell, and David Atwell IV,
who brought him great joy and pride.
David is also survived by his loving siblings: Johnny (Dorothy) Jenkins of Atlanta, Georgia;
Deloris Jenkins of Gough, Georgia; Gloria (Keith) McDonald of Hampton, Georgia; Pauline
Atwell of Gough, Georgia; Paul Atwell of Gough, Georgia; Tony (Sonia) Atwell of
Waynesboro, Georgia; and Tyrone (Deborah) Atwell of McDonough, Georgia.
In addition, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and
dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
David’s legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to family will live on in the hearts of all who
knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit and the memories he created will remain
with us forever.
